Helvetia
Half Marathon
This event has been around for four years and will stay around
for a long time. It was a great race to begin with and has gotten
better every year. You can bet the day will be warm and it was
but there was plenty of support along the course. Finishing on
the soft turf at the Hillsboro Stadium was a welcome treat for
the feet of some 2,000 participants. And then there was the great
Helvetia burgers that are served up every year along with that
nice cold beverage of your choice. Oh, and the beer! If you only
do one half in the summer dont miss this one held in June.

Run
Hit Wonder
If youve ever asked Where are they now? this
was the race for you. Nike brought its innovative ideas and marketing
moxie back home this summer with a creative 5k and 10k through
downtown Portland. In perhaps the summers most eagerly awaited
event, Nikes Run Hit Wonder coupled a well-organized running
and walking event with a multi-stage concert tour.
While
a few people probably actually raced it, the vast majority of
participants took the event one mile at a time, stopping to enjoy
the on-course entertainment along the way. Hundreds of runners
and walkers crowded around the stages featuring bands like Tone
Loc, General Public, and Tommy Tutone. The groups cycled through
their famous songs, sometimes playing the same song over and over
again.
At
the end, Pioneer Square was packed to capacity as Devo entertained
the Sea of Blue, a crowd of 10,000 people all wearing the required
Nike-issued performance shirts with

Foot
Traffic Flat Half on Sauvie Island
What better way to spend a Fourth of July than doing a half marathon
before all the potato salad, burgers, then sitting back with friends
and enjoying an evening of fireworks. The theme was traditional
red, white, and blue beautifully done by Sara Cross. The decorations
set the mood and, everyone was up beat, participants were full
of fun ready to soak up the sun.
This
marathon and half marathon was well attended by almost 800 participants.
It was well organized, and the post race eats of strawberry shortcake
were the best!
The
strategically placed water stops and restrooms had no lines and
were appreciated by all.
C.A.T.
Walk
Nearly 560 walkers participated in the Tuality Healthcare Foundations
fourth annual 5K C.A.T. (Cancer Awareness and Treatment) Walk
presented by West Coast Bank and West Coast Trust held on July
3, in downtown Hillsboro.
The
fun walk brought community members, cancer survivors and their
families together to help raise nearly $50,000 to fund cancer
treatment, outreach, and education programs for residents of western
Washington County.
Event
organizers thank the sponsors, volunteers, walkers and Health
& Wellness Fair participants who made the 2004 C.A.T. Walk
such a great success!
Go
Girl 5k
Who says 5ks are a thing of the past? This first-time womens
only event was a winner all around, from the beautiful day, the
fast course, and the awesome T-shirt. There
were around 250 participants starting at OMSI. For some it was
the first time they had ever entered a race because of the non-threatening
environment. Grandmothers entered with their granddaughters. Some
ran fast, some walked slow, some took their time to enjoy the
scenery and some racewalked and left a number of the runners in
the dust. This event is a must-do next year so put it on
your calendar.
Walk
or Run for the Wildwood
This 5th annual walk in the woods raises funds to maintain this
urban hiking trail one of the longest in the United States.
With three distances to choose from: 2.5, 7.5. and 20 miles this
event was well supported with food, water and restrooms (so okay,
how do they get the porta potties up on those trails?) It was
well attended by over 650 participants of all ages. We were entertained
by Paul the DJ/announcer. This event benefits Friends of Forest
Park Trails Program
