Great Columbia Crossing

October 3, 2010

Register now for your chance to walk or run across the longest continuous three-span through truss bridge in the nation located in Astoria. Being the highest event around it will provide participants with a spectacular birds-eye view of the greater Astoria region. A real homegrown, hometown event, it’s a great opportunity to spend a Sunday morning on the coast like no other this year with family, friends, and neighbors alike. Make some new friends too. The 10k course is mostly flat, with a challenging incline on the bridge rising 200 feet over the ship channel.

This year you can enjoy a light after-race snack at the finish line and have five Clam Dollars to spend at local area participating businesses over the weekend.

Four local area grade schools will receive funding from the event that will enhance programs promoting physical activity in young children. The event planners understand the need to start early with youngsters, they are proud to assist these fine schools on both sides of the Columbia River in promoting health and wellness for: Hilda Lahti Elementary, John Jacob Astor Elementary, Naselle Schools, and Warrenton Grade School.

Artist Don Nisbett has provided another great piece of art depicting the event and it will be available on T-shirts which can be purchased at time of registration. This year’s presenting sponsor is Pacific Power, celebrating 100 years of service.

You can sign up to participate online

Columbia River Power Marathon
October 23, 2010

In only its third year, the Columbia River Power Marathon has grown into a five event fitness festival for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities: Kid’s Mile, 8K Walk/Run, Half Marathon Walk/Run, Marathon, and Marathon Relay. The Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, and 8K all start and finish at the Big River Golf Course in Umatilla, OR. From the start, participants descend to the waterfront and traverse the Columbia River to Washington via McNary Dam. This event marks the only time each year that the dam is open to the public.

Once in Washington, the route meanders along the basalt bluffs overlooking the river. At 2.5 miles, 8K runners and walkers turn around and retrace their tracks back to the golf course. Marathoners, half marathoners, and relay participants continue to Plymouth, WA before returning to Oregon across the I-82/US 395 foot bridge.
Upon arrival in Oregon, the route continues through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Nature Trails. From the nature trails (where the Kid’s Mile starts and finishes) the course continues past the dock at the Port of Umatilla and drops into McNary Beach Park. At this juncture, half marathoners climb back to the golf course to finish while the marathoners continue for five miles more along the scenic, earthen Lewis and Clark Trail to Hatrock State Park. After looping past Hatrock, participants return to McNary Beach Park on the Lewis and Clark Trail before ascending to the finish.

Clif Bars, Clif Shots, bananas, oranges, Gatorade, and water will be at the aid stations and finish. An Oregon potato bar, music, and entertainment will be awaiting all finishers. Stylish shirts, drawstring bags, and memorable finisher medals are all part of the powerful experience you will have at the 2010 Columbia River Power Marathon.

The spectacular views include the Santa Catalina mountains at the base of Pusch Ridge, just six miles north of Tucson. The mild temperatures make for great walking weather. Book your room early at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Resort and get the VIP upgrade. You will receive two credentials to the VIP tent for breakfast and private porta potties. You also receive the Mizuno half-zip official jacket valued at $70. If you are bringing your small children you can walk with strollers in the 5k. These rooms will sell out fast, as will the event.
