A New Year’s Resolution to Keep and Help Someone Too

With the holiday season just days behind us and a whole list of “to do’s” ahead, why not do something good for yourself while making a positive impact on those who truly need it? Perhaps you have thought about participating in an endurance event before but did not know where to begin.

Members of Team In Training (TNT) conquer endurance events such as half or full marathons while supporting efforts to find a cure for blood cancers.

Through this unique program, whether you are a novice or an experienced walker, you will be on a team that will address your individual needs and prepare you for an amazing event. The program is packed with supportive features, including personalized fitness training by certified coaches, training clinics, and a supportive group of teammates striving along side you.

Training for and participating with TNT is a proud acknowledgement of the human spirit, physical ability, and mental endurance. It is also a celebration of life. TNT weaves connections between all of us through the use of endurance event training as a symbol of hope. Participants raise money for cancer research and services as they honor patients and their families with every step they take.

Join the team now! Register to train for one of our great upcoming events: Race for the Roses, Eugene Marathon and Half Marathon, Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, or Mayor’s Marathon and Half Marathon. Registration will take place in starting in January, 2009.

For more information on the program and how to join the team, and events to train for throughout the year, call the local chapter at 503-245-9866 or 800-466-6572 or visit www.teamintraining.org/or.

The Beauty Is Back at Whidbey Island Event
March 29, 2009

For 2009, the Whidbey Island Half Marathon has undergone a major course revision. The 2008 Whidbey Island Marathon used a temporary course that did not meet all expectations. As a result, the 2009 course has been revised to include most of the original course that received rave reviews for its scenic beauty from participants in years past. The course now keeps to the east side of Whidbey Island, WA, where runners and walkers can expect to see views of Crescent Harbor, Saratoga Passage, Penn Cove and the Cascade mountains. Bald eagles and deer are frequently seen on the course. The finish will take place in Oak Harbor’s Windjammer Park.

As in the past, Whidbey will continue to be a “green” marathon, priding itself on the amount of waste materials that are recycled or composted. Runner’s World magazine listed Whidbey number two in this category of events.

Walkers have always been a significant part of the Whidbey event. In recent years, they have had a few safety issues. This year they are asking their walkers to please observe rules of course etiquette and yield to runners at the start and throughout the course. “We know our walkers are having a great time conversing with friends and enjoying the scenery, but they really need to be aware of marathoners,” said John Kaiser, event director. They are asking their walkers not to walk three and four abreast on the course and be conscious of their all their surroundings. Though the walk has always been a “non-competitive” event, walkers will enjoy the same chip timing, technical fabric shirt and finisher’s medals as the runners.
