Go Geek! Gadgets and Gear for Fun in the Sun

By Susan Rich
Window shopping — that’s what the missus calls a perfect summer stroll. But the mister, well, he wants to go for a hike. So the missus agreed to go. She grabs her gear, got Dog Geek suited up, gave neighbor Mama and baby Geek a call, and they’re off for a fun day in the sun.

Mrs. Geek

1. Hat
For maximum sun protection, a hat with an oversized brim is a must. The missus shades her face and neck with the Wallaroo Sydney, a crushable, lightweight topper.

2. Sunglasses
The Geeks are all about eye protection, and Native sunglasses are their top choice. Designed for athletes, these lightweight, polarized lenses provide excellent protection and come in a variety of styles.

3. Backpack
Not that the Geeks expect any trouble on the trail, but their Trek Safe 100 day pack is designed to thwart thieves. Designed with eXomesh™, the roomy bag features stainless steel wire mesh, which makes the backpack slashproof, tamperproof, and snatchproof.

4. Shirt
A perfect base layer that will take the missus from hike to restaurant, SportHill’s Essential II Shimmel is a comfortable confection that incorporates a built-in bra with no-chafe seams.

5. Wrist Watche
Two hearts might beat as one, but the Geeks like to know whose is whose. That’s why they each wear a Timex Ironman Heart Rate monitor. The device not only tracks their respective heart rates during exercise, it lets them know when they’re not in their target zone. The watches do double duty as a calorie counter. Chronograph, alarm, and timer features are standard.

6. Water Bottle
Mrs. Geek opts for the Hydraform Handheld™ water bottle for her on-the-go hydration needs. The ergonomic, sweat-wicking design makes swigging from the 20 oz bottle a breeze.

7. Capri
Sleek, not snug, the missus dons a pair of SportHill Gym Capri — an easy choice for an outing. The broad waistband promises all day comfort; the extra length protects her legs from scratches and bug bites.

8. Poles
The missus is a big fan of Nordic Walking and was pleased to learn that her Fit Trek poles can also be used while hiking, giving her extra stability and aerobic conditioning on the trail.

9. Pink Socks
The missus is a hero for the breast cancer cause and is proud to sport the pink ribbon on her thin-cushioned Everyday Walkers by Thorlo.

10. Road ID Tag
Mrs. Geek never leaves home without her Road ID tag: This version attaches to the tongue of her hiking boots and lists contact information and drug allergies.

11. Shoe Pocket
The missus has lost her keys in the past, but now she keeps her keys and other valuables connected to her shoe
with the ZipPod™ Shoe Pocket.

Hiking Boots
The missus chose the Keen Targhee Mid II as her inaugural hiking boot. With its waterproof membrane and multi-directional lug outsole, the boot is a sturdy companion on dry trails or muddy riverbanks.

Mama and Baby Geek!
Keeping fit while pregnant is one thing (see article on page 12 to find out how); keeping up with an energetic two-year-old is another. Mama Geek keeps her cool on the hottest days by choosing easy-care clothing and gear.

1. Hat
Proving that sun-safe clothing can be colorful and safe, Mama Geek crowns her tresses with a raspberry-colored Rolled Brim Hat from Sun Precautions. A chin strap keeps the hat in place on breezy days. www.sunprecautions.com

2. Sunglasses
Mama Geek goes Native, at least when it comes to eye protection. Her tortiseshell frames are lightweight and sturdy, with polarized lenses. www.nativeeyewear.com

3. Backpack
Mama Geek uses Deuter’s ACT Lite backpack instead of a diaper bag. Weighing in at just over 3 lbs, this capacious pack makes the perfect carry-all. The adjustable harness and bilaminate hip belt ensure comfort.

4. Wrap
Mama is mindful of the environment and chose this Prana jersey cotton wrap because it is made from organic cotton and blended with spandex for extra comfort. www.prana.com

5. Shirt
“Geek Chic” is what Mama calls her Crush Sport Top. Made with Viana® performance fabric, the ruched front and elasticized side seams offer a looser fit and lasting shape retention, making this a comfortable choice for early pregnancy...Baby Geek No. 2 is due September 2007. www.prana.com

6. Kanteens
Both Mama and Baby have their own:
Durable, ultralight stainless steel is the key component in the environmentally friendly Klean Kanteen. These sport bottles range from 12 oz to 40 oz. There is even a sippy-cup-styled bottle for Baby Geek. www.kleankanteen.com

DOG GEEK
Dog Geek steps out in style with his Growler Cinch Top portable food tote and Quencher, a collapsible food and water bowl, both made by RuffWear.
www.ruffwear.com

A glow-in-the-dark collar is perfect for dusk or nighttime treks, and Dog Geek wears the Nite Ize LED illuminated dog collar. Press the button on this collar and he is visible to motorists or other walkers for up to 1,000 feet. www.niteize.com

Dog Geek snoozes in style on his “Mt. Bachelor pad,” a canine travel bed by RuffWear. Perfect for car trips, camping, or a dog bed in the house, this cushy mattress compresses into a compact bedroll with a carry handle.

It’s a good idea to give a dog a chew toy – this stuffed latex monkey is virtually indestructible and makes a great tugtoy for two.

Mr. Geek

1. Hat
When it comes to covering his head, the mister prefers Teva’s Yukon Floatable Boonie: A lightweight hat that goes from backpack to head with nary a crumple.
www.teva.com

2. Sunglasses
The Geeks are all about eye protection, and Native sunglasses are their top choice. Designed for athletes, these lightweight, polarized lenses provide excellent protection and come in a variety of styles.
www.nativeeyewear.com

3. Headlamp
“Oh, by the light of the moon,” sings Mr. Geek. Their day trip ran a bit late, so he pulled out his Black Diamond Lunar headlamp. It fits snugly over his hat and uses a Xenon bulb to illuminate the trail, the darkened parking lot, and Mrs. Geek’s even darker brow.

4. Forest Park Map Set
Mr. Geek studies one of the set of 10 individual maps that features various loop hikes and walking trails throughout Forest Park. Designed with the moist Portland climate in mind, the PolyArt maps are water and wear resistant. At $19.95 and packaged in an attractive corrugated box, the set makes the ideal gift. www.friendsofforestpark.org

6. Cool Shirt
Sun protection — UPF 45 — is embedded in this ultra-lightweight long-sleeved Cool Shirt made by Cloudveil. Its clean look and easy-care fabric make it a top pick for Mr. Geek’s weekend wear.
www.cloudveil.com

7. Cool Short
For the mister, cool rules, so it makes sense that both his shirt and short come from the Cloudveil “Cool” collection. This short, with its 7” inseam, features double-deep back pockets and front slash pockets. Plenty of storage for a wallet, ID, and a trail map.
www.cloudveil.com

8. Socks
The mister chose Thorlo socks: The company’s no-chafe, no-blister, no worries technology is a no-brainer on the trail.
www.thorlo.com

9. Tent
Once home, the mister unpacked his Black Diamond
Guiding Light tent, staking out a piece of ground in the backyard. He and Dog Geek shared quarters for the night in this super-lightweight tent designed for backpacking that sleeps four. At sunrise, the missus unzipped the full-size door, calling her intrepid campers in for vittles.

Hiking Boot
The mister keeps his balance in a hiking boot by New Balance. This is a first for the athletic shoe manufacturer, featuring its patented technology for shock absorption, combined with a waterproof, breathable mid-cut exterior that is both comfortable and durable.
