 Pints to Pasta
September 9, 2007
If you are looking for a precursor to the Portland Marathon, then come out and join the crowd on September 9th. The route replicates part of the Portland marathon route beginning at mile 22. This 10k has been voted as one of the best and is not to be missed. The event director, Paula Harkin, started this event in 2003; she wanted to get away from downtown and offer a beautiful route starting at the Adidas campus, meandering through some of Portland’s historic neighborhoods, and ending at the Spaghetti Factory, (all downhill).
From this vantage point you can get a fantastic view of beautiful downtown Portland and all of its magnificent bridges. Harkin brought together the sponsors, the Old Spaghetti Factory and Widmer Brothers Brewing, and they bring the pasta and the pints. This event is a must for those training for the marathon, and it is also a great first-time event. Come out and join the fun, food, and brew.

Step Out to Fight Diabetes
For an event in your area
visit www.diabetes.org
Every 21 seconds another American is diagnosed with diabetes. Already, over 21 million people live with it, and an additional 6 million are not even aware that they have it. It does not discriminate, and there is no cure. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is out to change that… and we are counting on you to help.
Look for the Step Out to Fight Diabetes walk in your area. These and other special events help raise money to support ADA’s wide array of programs. In addition to funding research and supporting advocacy and education programs across the country, ADA reaches right into local communities to make a difference in the lives of people living with diabetes. The Safe at School program equips education professionals with the tools to create a safe environment for children who must manage their diabetes at school. We work with local lawmakers to develop school programs, including healthy lunches and physical education as part of all curriculum. We offer support for families who have a newly diagnosed member, and we are a connection to resources for those who lack insurance coverage. All of this is made possible with the support of people like you.
The ADA’s Step Out to Fight Diabetes is a one-day, high-energy walk held in the fall in more than 200 cities nationwide. Routes range from one to six miles and are accessible to people of all ages and levels of mobility. Check out the Step Out to Fight Diabetes Web site at diabetes.org/stepout.
Every walker, every dollar, every step brings us closer to a cure. Please support Step Out to Fight Diabetes by registering to walk in your community today. You DO make a difference. |

First Annual Discover
VancouverUSA Ramble
July 21, 2007
The Columbia River Orienteering Club (CROC) is pleased and excited to announce the first Discover VancouverUSA Ramble. Walkers, joggers, and runners will take to the streets, byways, trails, and waterways of Vancouver, WA, on July 21. They’ll ramble through the Historic Reserve and Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, tour downtown Vancouver and the Farmers Market, follow the trails along the Columbia River and Burnt Bridge Creek, and visit the neighborhoods in between.
This ramble will be a showcase for Vancouver, raising funds for the Parks & Recreation Foundation of Vancouver & Clark County, and provide people an easy introduction to a healthy, lifetime activity.
Competitive orienteers use a map, compass, and their own navigation skills to follow a route that’s marked on the map but unmarked on the ground, typically a park or undeveloped area. All ages, from Scout-age children to seniors in their 70s (and older), are welcome.
The Ramble is a variation of orienteering that takes place on city streets and footpaths. Participants are free to use a compass or GPS, but the navigation is simple enough that participants only need the map.
Discover VancouverUSA Ramble participants will have a map of Vancouver marked with 100 checkpoints. They’ll try to find as many checkpoints as possible within the 2-, 4-, or 6-hour time limits, choosing which ones to look for, in whatever order they’d like.
There will be no flags or other markers at the checkpoints. Participants will answer a simple question to prove they’ve been to each location, for example, “When was this public art installed?”
The Discover VancouverUSA Ramble has elements of a walk, a race, an historic tour, and a treasure hunt, all at the same time. With three different time limits, everyone can find a place and a pace of their own.
Register for the event through active.com, or on the event’s website, www.vancouverusaramble.org, or at www.croc.org. |

Portland Start! Heart Walk Raises Record Amount
More than 3,000 people participated in the American Heart Association’s Portland Metro Start! Heart Walk this year, raising a record $252,000 for the fight against heart disease and stroke in our community.
Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, remain the No. 1 killer in the Pacific Northwest and across the country, claiming more lives than the next four causes of death combined. Each year the 5K walk (and 1.5K walk for survivors) draws participants of all ages from across the region to start making a difference.
In addition to raising money to fight heart disease, the Start! Heart Walk gives participants a chance to take important steps toward their own heart-healthy life. As part of the AHA’s new Start! movement to get Americans walking, this year’s event featured new experiences and opportunities to provide walkers with the tools, resources, and inspiration they need to make walking part of their daily lives.
This year’s Portland Metro Start! Heart Walk’s Signature Sponsor was Kaiser Permanente, with national support from Subway, Healthy Choice, and AstraZeneca. Other local sponsors included PG&E, The Standard, Providence Heart and Vascular Institute, and Oregon Health and Science University. Media sponsors included K-Hits 106.7, FOX 12, PDX 49, TriMet, and Walk About Magazine.
