“Rogaining” Returns to Central Oregon

May 26 to 27, 2007

If you’re looking for a hiking adventure on Memorial Day weekend, how about an orienteering weekend in a little-seen part of Central Oregon?

The Columbia River Orienteering Club is hosting this 24-hour rogaining competition. The event is open to all who need more excitement than you can find on a simple weekend stroll.

Rogaining is the endurance form of the map-and-compass sport. The objective is to reach as many control points on the map as you can without going over the time limit. There will be eight, 12, and 24-hour divisions.

For the fourth time, the location will be the 25,000-acre ranch formerly known as the Big Muddy. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, this ranch near Antelope, OR, was notoriously know as “Rajneeshpuram.” Now the home of a Christian youth camp, there are many square miles of undeveloped, ruggedly beautiful countryside. The course planners take advantage of every scenic view to give competitors an experience that is as scenic as it is strenuous.

A variety of participants are expected, from couples enjoying a casual, but lengthy, eight-hour hike, to adventure racers getting ready for the summer’s season of multi-day, multi-sport competition.

If you want to give rogaining a try, visit the club’s website, www.croc.org, for details and registration information. You’ll also find a schedule of upcoming orienteering events closer to home, so you can hone your navigation skills.

Teams are required: two to five members. SportIdent electronic control punching is required. Some SportIdent fingersticks are available for rent. On-site camping is free at the event center. Lessons for beginners will be given Friday evening at the event center.

Virginia Mason
Team Medicine
Marathon at Seafair

July 8, 2007

Join thousands of runners and walkers for the premier Pacific Northwest summer athletic experience and one of the top destination marathons in the country. Enter the new Nordic walking division, gather friends in a marathon team relay, tackle the half marathon run/walk, or try the 5k run/walk. There is an event for everyone and every skill level.

The Seafair Pirates have laid claim to the 2007 marathon. The beloved hulk, Moby Duck, will act as the official “pace car” and the “boom” of the cannon will signal the start of the race. Also look for the salty troupe’s shenanigans along the route and at the finish line. Where there are Seafair Pirates, there’s sure to be debauchery.

Nordic Walking
Seafair is proud to offer a Nordic Walking Division for the Half Marathon Walk in 2007. This division is open to all levels regardless of skill or ability. Nordic walking combines the positive training effects of walking combined with the total-body exercise advantage of cross-country skiing. More Nordic walking training tips, equipment questions, and other information is available on their website.

Kids Mini-Marathon
Calling all kids! Seafair offers children the opportunity to run 26.2 miles and learn the importance of a healthy lifestyle and goal setting. Children run, walk, or jog 25.2 miles prior to the marathon, recording each step on a running log downloaded off the website. On July 8, 2007, the mini-marathoners will complete the final steps of the marathon and receive a finisher’s medal, Brooks T-shirt, and a space blanket.

Supporting the Virginia Mason Team Medicine Marathon are over 1,000 dedicated volunteers who strive to make the event efficient, organized, and enjoyable. For complete event volunteer information, course maps, and registration information, visit seafairmarathon.com or email marathon@seafair.com.

Wonders of Walking®
Offers Two New Walks

July 20 to 21, 2007

To compliment the Fourth Annual Willamette Valley Relay this year, Wonders of Walking® (WOW) has added two new events.

First up is the First Annual Willamette Valley Half Relay. Although it’s half the distance it equals the fun. The event has a late night start Friday, July 20th, at 11:30 pm, great for competitors who want to compete but can’t get that Friday off work. The race starts in Scio, OR, which is 20 miles south of Salem. Cross the same finish line with the full relay teams, just 73.5 miles down the road. Stimulate your stride this summer with this new event. All WOW events are designed for walkers by walkers.

WOW can build your team for you or you can join a team that needs an extra walker. Or if you have a few too many walkers who couldn’t fit on an existing team, add some competition and get to the finish line before the full relay team.

The second new event is the First Annual Willamette Valley 10k Walk/Run. This event is great for the walker/runner who has a friend or family member participating in the other two races and wants to be a part of the event. This new tradition will start at Alton Baker Park, Eugene, OR, at 8 am on Saturday July 21, and will share the same finish line with the other two races.

WOW will wow you with great food and entertainment at the finish line. An event for the whole family. Mark your calendar now for these special events.

Visit www.wondersofwalking.com to get more information and to register for all events. A portion of all proceeds goes to the Providence
Brain Institute.

The First Annual
Rock ‘n Relay

July 28, 2007

Are you ready to take part in a new running and walking marathon event? The First Annual Rock ‘n Relay is coming and it is sure to be a huge hit (pun intended). This one-day marathon relay will have live local bands playing throughout the event, tasty food, a wonderful beer garden, and much more. Get four friends together, pick a fun team name, sign up, and help support the Portland Schools Foundation.
There are men’s and women’s teams, co-ed teams, corporate teams, non-profit teams, and high school teams. Three members do the 2-mile circuitous course three times and one “ringer” does the loop four times.
Gather family, co-workers, classmates, and friends together and join the fun! Better yet, break your existing relay team into three groups and have an inter-team rivalry!
The festivities all take place in downtown Portland at Duniway Park. The beautiful, shaded course takes you along Barbur Blvd. and Terwilliger with great views of the surrounding landscape. Cheer your teammates on as they head down the hill toward the exchange area where live music and festivities awaits. Hurry and register now — this event is limited to 500 teams. Stop by any of the three Foot Traffic locations or visit www.terrapinevents.com to sign up or for more information.
