BACK TO ISSUE SEVENTEEN
Gear Geeks Gain Ground
Mr. and Mrs. Gear Geek take time to smell the roses during their sojourn in the Rose City. “Portland was named the Number One city for walkers,” notes the mister. “Let’s head out.” “After we go shoe shopping,” exclaims the missus, noticing the casual shoe review on page 14 of this issue.

Mrs. Geek

Hat
The Geeks wear lightweight and breathable microfiber hats to protect their heads and shield their eyes from bright sunshine.

Road ID Tag
Mrs. Geek never leaves home without the mister (and she wishes he would do the same), but when she takes Dog Geek on the road they both wear dog tags. Hers, from Road ID, lists contact information and drug allergies. www.RoadID.com

Shirt
It's good to be green and the missus is proud to wear her Jessie Strappy, by Sportif. Made from 60% organic cotton and 3% Lycra, the stretchy tee's built-in bra provides maximum comfort.

Fanny Pack
Amphipod's Air Flow Endurance is an ergonomically designed bounce-free bag with a fully vented front and back, and plenty of room for snacks, ID, an MP3 player, and other walk-about extras the missus can't do without. www.amphipod.com

Pants
"SPF-treated pants, what a great idea!" Mrs. Geek says of her McKenna pant, made by Sportif. The stylish full-length trouser rolls up into Capris, and the lightweight fabric makes these a comfortable choice for a hike or everyday wear.

Sunglasses
Mrs. Geek swiped her stylish pink Zeal sunglasses from Mama Geek (see Mama Geek).

Heart Monitor
The missus already wears her heart on her sleeve, so the HighGear Pulsewear Mini, which looks like a sleek wristwatch monitors pulse and heart rate, and doubles as a pedometer. www.highgear.com

Pedometer
The missus is mindful of her weight. Instead of asking the mister if she looks fat, she checks her HighGear VIA Sport Pedometer, which offers a body fat analyzer in addition to the usual tracking functions.

Shoes
With plenty of toe-wiggling room, the flexible Fila Flow Asylum is a great shoe for walking. The all-mesh top keeps Mrs. Geek’s Smart-Wool clad feet cool.

Mama Geek
While on the trail, Mr. and Mrs. Geek met up with Mama Geek and her baby. "A geek in training," cooed the missus. "How sweet!"

Hoody
A new take on an old favorite: Mama Geek is wearing the Purity Hoody, by Sierra Design. The full zip front, fitted form, and flatlock seams make this a versatile piece for when the sun slips behind the clouds.
www.sierradesigns.com

Pants
Mama Geeks on the go will appreciate the Marcy Capris, by Isis. This pant is made from a lightweight, stretchy fabric and sports drawcord hems and articulated knees. A microsuede adjustable waistband and zippered cargo and back pockets offer extra storage. www.isisforwomen.com

Shoes
Carrying a baby around makes for tired feet, Mama Geek takes a “Bite” out of foot pain by wearing the Bite’s ergonomically designed sandal, the Spirit OS. www.biteshoes.com

Pack
Mama Geek carries Baby Geek in a Kid Comfort II pack made by Deuter. The pack boasts a new improved back system and hip fins for increased carrying comfort. A height-adjustable child seat makes carrying, and being carried, a breeze.

Zeal Sunglasses
Pretty in pink, or a rainbow of colors, Zeal sunglasses are designed to fit all kinds of faces. This eyewear is prescription compatible, and offers interchangeable lenses to fit the needs of active and casual users. www.zealoptics.com

Baby Shoes
The soft leather soles on these Robeez shoes allow Baby Geek to flex his tiny toes on the trail while protecting him from the elements. www.robeez.com

DOG GEEK
Dog Geek steps out in style with his Growler Cinch Top portable food tote and Quencher, a collapsible food and water bowl, both made by RuffWear.
www.ruffwear.com

A glow-in-the-dark collar is perfect for dusk or nighttime treks, and Dog Geek wears the Nite Ize LED illuminated dog collar. Press the button on this collar and he is visible to motorists or other walkers for up to 1,000 feet. www.niteize.com

Dog Geek snoozes in style on his “Mt. Bachelor pad,” a canine travel bed by RuffWear. Perfect for car trips, camping, or a dog bed in the house, this cushy mattress compresses into a compact bedroll with a carry handle.

It’s a good idea to give a dog a chew toy – this stuffed latex monkey is virtually indestructible and makes a great tugtoy for two.

Baby Geek cleans up well after a long day on the trail – his mama uses Baby Bouquet, a line of natural bath and skin care products formulated to keep delicate skin and scalp clean and moisturized.

Mr. Geek

Hydration System
Keeping hydrated is important and Mr. Geek sports a Deuter Hydrapack Chute. This small, lightweight pack is fully insulated, holds up to 50 oz of water, and is easy-to-clean; the bag flips inside-out like a sock.
www.deuter.com

Shirt
“It’s like air conditioning for the body!” says Mr. Geek about his SportHill Synergy Mesh Tee. This soft, stretchy shirt has a breathable mesh back and raglan sleeves, providing excellent moisture management on hot days. www.sporthill.com

Shorts
No fanny pack needed when the mister wears the SportHill Kinetic Short. Featuring a zippered invisible back pocket as well as an inside pocket, he’s got all the space he needs for ID, car keys, and an energy bar.

Clip-on Pedometer
Mr. Geek keeps track of his steps, calories burned, and miles walked with a HighGear pedometer (front).

Wrist Pedometer
The mister is such a gadget guru that today he can’t make up his mind: That’s a HighGear VIA he’s got strapped to his wrist. More than a wristwatch, this nifty device is a step- and calorie-counter and features a 1/100 chronograph, as well as a distance traveled time display.

Shoes
The mister knows that New Balance shoes are designed to accommodate unusual sizes or widths. He’s wearing an M1060, a high-mileage, cushioned shoe perfect for urban walking or light trails. www.newbalance.com

Sunglasses
Mr. Geek shields his baby blues in Native sunglasses. Designed for athletes, these lightweight, polarized lenses provide excellent protection and come in a variety of styles. www.nativeeyewear.com

Poles
The Geeks enjoy Nordic Walking – they both use Fit Trek poles to boost aerobic conditioning, amp calories burned, and get an upper body workout.
www.fittrek.com

Socks
A smart gear geek, the mister sports SmartWool socks, designed to be stink-free even if he wears them two days in a row (“Don’t admit that!” grumbles the missus.) www.smartwool.com
